There is at least one known case where Assault Wing crashes randomly because of sounds. The only way to know the game has crashed because of sounds is that the crash report contains a mention of XAudio.dll. The crash is something we cannot help but is probably due to certain sound drivers and/or a particular combination of sound hardware.

To work around the issue, change the sound engine from Assault Wing menus, Setup -> Audio -> Engine -> XACT. Remember to restart Assault Wing for the engine change to take effect.

There is no other reason to ever use the XACT engine in Assault Wing. The other sound engine, XNA, has more features and is the recommended default.

This bug has been fixed in Assault Wing 1.14.0.0. The option for the XACT sound engine has been removed from Assault Wing 1.16.0.16.
